BRIEF

A studio and guest artist retreat for a filmmaker.

STORY

The site is 10 acres of formerly cultivated land abutting a reserve forest. In the absence of an urban built context the architecture invariably becomes sculpture in the wild – object in a landscape. The design is characterized by a projecting roof plate and a sinuous stone retaining wall, which create a dynamic composition of forms both sinking into the earth and floating above it.

The stone wall wraps along the longer elevation of the main built volume articulating degrees of separation between shelter and nature. It also forms a non-linear axis of movement contiguous to the building, creating a meandering trajectory of discovery. The indoors are designed to overlook sweeping vistas of forest land. Deep roof overhangs protect the large glass surfaces from direct sunlight. The planted roof ensures that
upper level is cool and habitable.
