A NEST IN THE TREES

DESIGN

This is a versatile 1/2/3 BHK First Shelter concept that can be tailored to fit into any site. Pictured here is a one-bedrooom shelter at a coffee plantation in Madikeri, Karnataka.

The building is located in the highest part of the site, within accessible distance from the proposed parking area. It is nestled between two large silver oak trees, a jungle tree and blueberry tree. A sheltered deck overlooks the best views in the property while integrating with the branches of these trees. Access to the building is from the higher contour, such that no steps need be climbed to reach the living room. It also makes the house wheelchair – friendly.

The massing of the architecture is such that the longer facades – eastern and western edges – are serrated to maximize openings towards the outside. This means more light, more ventilation, more views.

Sloped roofs protect the built volumes and make rainwater harvesting easy. The roof form is split, creating a clerestory. The clerestory windows are oriented towards the east to catch the morning light. The deeper inclined roof + deck protect the indoor spaces from harsh western light.

The building is constructed on stilts, leaving the land underneath largely undisturbed. This ensures that the natural flow of water in the site remains uninterrupted while also providing a sheltered (somewhat) usable area under the building. The stilted structure also elevates the building, creating a vantage point for optimal views and natural light
